Texas Hits Big In The Portal
SPEAKER_01It takes a long horns had a massive weekend in the transfer board. Welcome into another edition of the Texas Longhorns on SI podcast. I'm your host, Matt Galatson of Texas Longhorns on SI. Joining me as always is my co-host, Zach Demitt. And Zach, Texas had a huge weekend in the transfer portal. We talked about it uh last week, how they had some guys that they were kind of circling. Uh David Punch was one of them. Isaiah Johnson was one of them. And guess what? They land them both. Uh big, big deal for Texas basketball in 2026. And they're still constructing their roster, and we'll get into that uh a little bit more here in a minute. But
Isaiah Johnson Fits Sean Miller
SPEAKER_01let's start with Isaiah Johnson, Zach, because he was the first commit. We thought it might be punch. It ended up ends up being Isaiah Johnson out of Colorado. And now Texas finally has their starting point guard. Uh big, big deal for the Longhorns here. He averaged 16.9 points, 2.9 rebounds, and three assists per game in 15 starts, uh, shooting 48.6% from the field. Uh, he played in 32 games last year. And this is kind of what Texas really, really needed to pursue. And they and they landed a guy that can take over that starting point guard role and really thrive in Sean Miller's up tempo offense.
SPEAKER_02For sure. And not only is he uh a guy that can play point guard, but he can really, really score it too. Uh only three games last season with Colorado, where he didn't score uh 10 points or more, and that's doing that in the Big 12, which is an elite conference, arguably the best in the country, along with the SEC. That is some big time stuff. I think he was really uh under uh underrated, you know, overlooked, even even coming out of high school, um, you know, in the Los Angeles area, he has he had a few you know nice offers, Colorado being one of them, but you know Rice, uh Weaver State, San Diego were other teams that offered him not a lot of high major offers. And this is a guy whose dad is a uh NBA trainer who's worked with Dwayne Wade, LeBron James, Tyrese Maxie. This guy is a uh basketball junkie, he he's got it in his blood. Both of his parents played D1, if I'm not mistaken. Um, so uh, you know, it's kind of weird that he didn't receive any uh any additional higher higher major offers and and had a big year Colorado and now he he's making the most of it by laying in with Texas, and I'm sure he's getting a pretty good NIL deal to go along with it. And uh yeah, big big uh big addition for Sean Miller. He can he can score the ball, he he can distribute, uh, kind of gives Texas what they didn't have this past season, and and and despite all that, still made it a few plays away from it from an elite eight. Um, you know, 30 32 appearances last season, 15 starts, kind of caught his rhythm as the uh as the year went on. But if you're scoring 16.9 points in the Big 12 as a true freshman, you're you're an elite scorer. Uh 56 threes, 37.8% from three, that's really good. That's really good numbers right there. Sometimes if a guy has a higher three-point percentage, you might think it's because of you know fewer attempts, but he had 148 three-point attempts this past season. Uh, that that's that's a really good number to to work with. And and you gotta be pleased if you're if you're Texas. Uh I think Isaiah Johnson eventually could be an NBA guy. Not right now, obviously. You know, he's gonna be headed to Texas, even not next offseason. It depends on what is what his year looks like. If he just you know you know blows up and and has a you know all-American campaign, then maybe heads he heads to the pros. But I I think maybe he's here for two more years and then head and then heads off to the NBA. I mean, like I mentioned, his dad's a former NBA trainer, so uh there's that potential there. There's that inside track to the league when it comes to doing what you need to do to become a professional basketball player uh at the highest level. And so yeah, we'll have to see what happens, but uh Texas fans should be super excited about his addition.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and and some of his track record is is extremely impressive when you consider that he did play in the Big 12, averaging 16.9 a game. Uh he had 21 against Texas Tech, he had night, uh, he had 19 against Kansas, he had 24 against Iowa State, uh, 27 against BYU, another you know, 13 against Texas Tech, 19 against Houston, 28 against Arizona. Those are all really, really good teams that he was able to perform against. So it's not like he was just racking up his numbers against you know some kind of lower tier Big 12 teams or uh you know some of the non-conference stuff. He was filling it up against the top-tier teams in the Big 12. Some of those defenses are incredibly good. I mean, you think about Houston's defense and the fact that he was able to uh put up some serious production against that defense. I mean, that shows that he can score on just about anybody. So that's great news for the Longhorns.
Proof He Scores Vs Elite Defenses
SPEAKER_01But obviously, Zach, as we mentioned, not the only big time commit for Texas over the weekend. We talked about David Punch last week and how we felt really good about that one. Sources were telling Texas Longhorns on SI that Texas was the team to beat in that race, and that turned out to exactly be the case. David Punch commits, uh, I believe it was it Sunday or was it Saturday?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was last night. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was last night. So, so yeah, so Sunday as we record this, so last night and uh another big time commitment for Sean Miller. I mean, this guy was one of the best players in the Big 12 as well, uh, averaging 14.1 points per game on 50.3% shooting from the floor. He also averaged 6.8 rebounds, two assists, 1.9 blocks. That last stat, Zach, I think, is might be the most important one of the group because Texas really struggled to defend the paint last year, uh, particularly at the four position. They they really struggled against some better, bigger four guys. And he's he is a rim protector. He is a guy that can block shots and play defense, but he can also score. And that's what I think all the Texas fans should be looking at and why Sean Miller should be very, very happy about this commitment.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely. Uh you know, you needed a point guard, obviously, but you could argue that getting that that four spot secured with with a with a starter-level guy was just as important. And David Punch certainly slots in immediately as a starter or as a starter in that front court alongside Modus Buchatitis. And and what a what a front court that is. You could argue that's one of the best in college basketball currently. We'll see how the rest of the portal plays out with some of these teams. But it that's that's something to really be excited about because not only can he pass the ball as a as a stretch four guy, he can he can put the ball on the on the floor. Uh if you need him to, you know, uh dribble at any at any time, you're not gonna feel uh like nervous or anything uh about that. And and he hit 11 threes this past season, so there's there's potential there for him to uh grow into a more of a shooter. You know, you don't want him jacking up 10 threes a game, but if he's open, he can he can shoot it, and I think he'll hit more threes next season than Sean Miller's offense, definitely. Um but yeah, it's the defense, it's the defense that is really intriguing about David Punch because he's really physical, he's a good rebounder. And you mentioned the 1.9 blocks. How about 1.3 steals as well for a big man? That's really, really good. Uh, if you if you can get two blocks and two steals a game almost per game, uh like that that's really that's really good numbers out of your four spot. And he can play some center uh if you want to go a little bit small. Um, and I I think Texas may do that a little bit, but obviously you're gonna want modest Poketias on the court most of the time, but unless he's in foul trouble. So um, yeah, big big time, big time for Texas. I I'm just I'm really excited to see what he offers on the defensive, on the defensive end, but also if you uh you know let's let's say you get him into the into the high pick and roll, and uh he gets the ball at the free throw line, defense has a step up to David Punch, and then he's lobbing it over Damatus Bocatitis for an easy dunk. That that's gonna cause some major problems for defenses because he can pass the ball from that spot, and that's not something Texas had at all this at all this past season. I mean, Camvin Heidi played the four, but he's not a four. He he's he's a three, he's a he's a wing guy. It wasn't really his fault. Texas just didn't have that player at that spot. Um, obviously, Nick Cody eventually you know rose into that as the season went on, and he had some nice high lows to modest Poketitis and you know played pretty well. But David Punch is gonna offer you a bit much uh improved upgrade at that spot. Obviously, he's a starter, and uh yeah, excited to see what he brings to the table.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and you know, it kind of begs the question now, Zach. I mean, obviously there's a lot still left to do with this roster because you had some you had some guys that are off to the pros that you still need to replace, and uh you still have a wing
David Punch Fixes The Paint
SPEAKER_01spot that is probably you know wide open. Uh you kind of wish Cam Heidi could have been back to fill that spot to a certain extent, but you know, uh that that that ship looks like it has sailed. Um and it, you know, we'll get into the starting lineup projection here in a minute, but it kind of seems like this is the first time in a long time, Zach, that Texas is all in on basketball. Because the the talent acquisition has not really been there the last few years. I mean, you you got you got some good ones with Tramon Mark, uh, at least last year he was good. The first year it was kind of up and down. Uh Dalen Swain was obviously a massive hit. Uh Jordan Pope was again up and down great late in the season, especially in the NCAA tournament, but not the guy necessarily that you thought you were getting when you brought him over from Oregon State. So, you know, it it really does seem like they are out to spend money, they are out to to really make some noise in the transfer portal in basketball for the first time in a long time, and you really love to see that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, uh, I I mean imagine if you can get Dalen Swain back, which is really unlikely. Uh, that starting lineup is uh an NBA sort of level starting lineup when you consider that Swain is NBA guy, Modus Book of Titus is eventually going to be an NBA guy, um, and then maybe eventually Isaiah Johnson, and then maybe eventually Austin Goosby.
SPEAKER_01So uh and don't count David Punch out either.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely not. Yeah, you know, you cannot count him out because he he offers a lot uh to the table, and so um yeah, it's uh 24-7 sports had Texas as the number two transfer portal class early on, and I know it is early. Uh, some of these teams get ranked when they only have one portal guy, and I think that's kind of silly. I think you need at least minimum two players, and so with Texas having two players, and they got they got the number two portal class according to 24-7, only behind Louisville, who added Florida Bedinga and uh Jackson Shellstad, which is a major get for them. So I I don't I don't remember the last time Texas had a portal class this elite, uh, and it's it's probably only gonna get better. I don't I don't think uh you're gonna get guys necessarily better than Isaiah Johnson and David Punch, but adding talent behind those guys will make this portal class look even better on paper. And it's really interesting to think about uh what that could look like next season once you have the entire roster all put together.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean the the the guys that are left in the roster uh in the in the transfer portal that are kind of at the top. Uh, you know, Mylon Mo I'm gonna put butcher this. Uh Mylonovich. Manchilovich. Wow, great job, Zach. Uh Masamba Jop. Uh, those are both big guys. It kind of seems like you have that filled out already. Alan Graves is another guy. He's a he's a power forward. Uh Paulius Marikoskis, uh, another power forward. So uh a lot of the guys at the top are are big guys. Uh so you you're you're kind of set there, at least in terms of of your starting lineup. Uh, but you landed the number uh 11 player in the portal in David Punch. You also landed the number six player uh in the portal. I believe he's number six, maybe he's a little bit lower. Oh, sorry, number 13 player in the portal in Isaiah Johnson. So that's two really, really good pickups. Uh and there's still more out there to fill out this lineup. But uh but as we stand right now here, Zach, we have a get we have kind of an idea of what the the starting lineup can begin to look like. Uh Isaiah Johnson obviously at point guard. Austin Goosby right now as your shooting guard makes a ton of sense. I mean, this guy's in McDonald's all American, he's going to be elite. Um, and then David Punch and Modest Vokatis as your as your four and your five. So that kind of leaves your your your your uh small forward wing spot open. Uh you hope to God that that Dalen Swain is going to be back in back in action. It's probably not going to happen, though. Never say never. We've seen crazier things happen. Uh maybe I don't know if Cam Heidi is is has Cam Heidi uh made a selection yet on where he's going? Maybe he can come out of the portal. Uh, you know, there's a lot of options there, but at least you have that for pretty much it seems like pretty much set, and that's a really, really good starting point for the long boards.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you you have to pray to God and I don't know, sacrifice a lamb or something like that if if you want Dalen Swain to come back. I I don't know.
Projecting The Starting Lineup
SPEAKER_02I just don't see it. Like you said, crazier things have happened. I just don't see it because the NIL budget uh it might it it's definitely increased for Texas, but I don't know how you can afford Dalen Swain, Mazboca Titus, David Punch, and Isaiah Johnson. Uh maybe I I hope I'm wrong. I just I personally don't see it, but that that would be an incredible starting lineup. The only thing with that starting lineup is you wouldn't have a lot of shooting. So uh we'll have to just wait and see. But yeah, uh the that three spot is is certainly open and up for grabs. I've seen some people say, oh, Bo Ogden, who's a true freshman coming in, needs to be in that three spot. Bo Ogden will have a roll off the bench this this upcoming season and later this fall, but he he's not ready to start in the SEC quite yet. Uh, you know, he'll he'll be a lifelong Longhorn who I think will spend probably four years with the team. But uh he's not he's not gonna start as a true freshman. I just don't think he's ready for that quite yet. But he's a great shooter and he'll provide nice depth. He'll definitely play. Don't get me wrong, he's not gonna redshirt anything like that. Uh, but that three spot's definitely open. One of the guys that you and I were talking about before the show started, it doesn't necessarily have to be a forward or a guy who's listed as a three. Uh, it just has to be a guy who has length and and who can shoot and who can offer a little bit of everything because that's what you need out of a three-spot. A guy who can put the ball on the floor, can shoot, and can defend. And Cameron Taylor, uh UNC Astville guard, you know, listed as a guard. Uh don't get too caught up in the in the uh you know positional listings sometimes. But Cameron Taylor is a guy 6'7, 185, has nice length, uh, can can score the ball, 18.9 points this past season, five rebounds, three assists. Yes, it's at the mid-major level, but he's receiving tons of looks from high major teams, and he's ready to make that jump. I have not seen Texas be like crazy involved and and and mentioned with him. Um, but you you would hope that that changes because I think he'd be a nice addition uh to this team next season. Uh, you know, 28 from three leaves a lot to be desired. Uh, that's not a great number. Uh he took a lot of threes, uh, 39 of 139 this past season from three, missed 100 threes. So uh, but he's still he still is uh gonna be improving as a shooter as time goes on. And so I think he could be a guy that Texas you know should target. We'll have to wait and see if that happens, though. Uh another guy, KJ Lewis, Georgetown transfer, kind of mentioned him a little bit before. Uh he he went to Duncanville in the Dallas area, so he's a Texas guy. He is visiting USC uh sometime this week. I think maybe even today he is. Haven't seen Texas involved with him, but he offers a lot when it comes to defense. He can shoot, he can put the ball on the floor. Uh, I I think that Texas should target him, but it seems unlikely now that he's taking a visit to USC. Sometimes with these portal guys, once they visit, it shows that they're
Targets For The Open Wing Spot
SPEAKER_02pretty close to committing. So we'll have just wait and see with that. But um, yeah, there those are just a few guys to look out for. Sometimes it's tough. Sometimes there's there's a guy that we uh might not even be noticing that Texas is targeting, and he's kind of an under-the-radar sort of player because it's not necessarily about who's the highest ranked guy in on the portal rankings, but who's the best fit for the roster. And and that may not be a guy who has uh you know grabbed a ton of attention or anything like that. We'll have to wait and see as this thing plays out. You know, Carter Knox is a guy from Arkansas who who, you know, super athletic can defend, not exactly a locked uh knockdown shooter, though, so I don't know if he's a good fit. He's great, really talented, but I don't know if he fits with the current makeup of this roster. Um we'll have to wait and see though. Uh you know, uh Dalen Swain, obviously, I'll go back to him for a second. You hope that he will return because regardless of the lack of shooting in that starting lineup, uh, you know, from that three spot, that that that would potentially be a top five preseason team right there if you have Dalen Swain in the mix. I mean, my goodness, you know, the expectations for Texas would be sky high. So we'll have to wait and see what happens there. But I I think uh well, I think it's very, very likely he stays in the draft because like I like I mentioned, the NIL number seems unrealistic considering who they already have. Uh, but we'll just have to wait and see.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, never count it out, never count it out, which it's just kind of you know unlikely. Um back to Cameron Taylor, though, just for a second, Zach. I know that he shot 28% from three, missed 100 threes this past year, uh, and that's not great. But Dalen Swain shot 25% from three in his last year at Xavier. Uh, he was he was only seven of twenty-eight. He didn't really shoot a whole lot, and then he comes to Texas and he shoots 34.4% from three uh on 2.1 more attempts per game. So he got better as a shooter with working with Texas and working with Sean Miller. Maybe if if they get involved with Cameron Taylor, they can kind of have the same treatment with him a little bit uh and he can improve his game there. I mean, even if you mark him up from a you know in the 20s to like the the the low to mid-30s at three in three-point shooting, that would really uh that would really help out a ton. But you know, Texas is it it really does seem like they're all in. We'll see where they go from here.
Portal Departures And Depth Questions
SPEAKER_01Uh they did have another loss in the portal, though, Zach. Uh international player Declan Duru uh announced his intentions to enter the portal today. Uh, it's not a major loss, though you you know, you you would have liked to have seen him stick around for depth. Uh, but uh nonetheless, it is the I believe the fourth loss now for the for the Longhorns in the portal. So um they'll have to find a way to replace that depth as well.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, not like super surprising and not super significant either. Uh I I do think Declan Duru, you know, he he definitely impressed Sean Miller early in the season. He has he has nice length, he obviously has profession uh professional experience, um, but he never really you know cracked the rotation because he's just young and he's just you know pretty raw. So uh Sean Miller had said earlier in the year that he he loved uh Duru's defense and his ability to get deflections on the ball. And he kind of said that he uh picked envisioned him potentially having a roll off the bench, but just never transpired that way. And he only appeared in 12 games. He appeared in two SEC games, uh, but yeah, not much of a role for him there. Uh yeah, not too surprising. I do think we had to watch out for what John Clark and Lewis Obiora do if they if they uh announce their uh intentions to stay. It seems like that is the case at this point, uh, because they haven't announced anything yet. And it, you know, the clock will be ticking there, obviously. So seems seems to be good on that part uh with those two guys, but with Duru, um, yeah, that you know that decision was gonna have to come one way or the other. Uh and hopefully it signals that Texas has some bigger plans at that spot off the bench. Uh, because while Sean Miller was high on him, I think you definitely can get an upgrade out of the portal with a guy who's who has some experience and and who can who can uh make more of an impact than just 12 games off the bench with not much scoring. So uh we'll have to wait and see what happens. But yeah, another loss, definitely the least significant loss. And uh you going back to Cam Heidi really quick, you mentioned him uh you know potentially maybe being able to come back, even though he entered the portal. We have seen guys do that, like in football, for example. But Cannon Heidi, uh, you know, 20% of sports have reported that he already has visits locked in with Grand Canyon and Auburn. So that seems unlikely, though. I do think that he would have been a really nice uh you know final piece in this current starting lineup right now. But uh, like I said, with Duru, with Heidi's departure, could signal that Texas has bigger plans in place at that spot, uh, which which could be uh really good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and and maybe with Duru out of the picture, that makes things a little bit easier for guys like John uh, you know, for guys like John Clark to decide okay, yeah, now my my my way in to to the rotation and getting playing time. Is a little bit more open. So we'll see where it goes. It's still very exciting stuff on the way for Texas basketball. There is no doubt
Football Recruiting Pickups And Big Targets
SPEAKER_01about that. But there's also some exciting stuff happening in Texas football that we needed to pay attention to on the recruiting trail.

SPEAKER_01And Zach, uh Texas got some additions in football as well over the weekend. They land a commitment from 2027 interior offensive linemen. Keon Hemphill Woods. He picked Texas over uh Texas AM, Texas Tech, TCU, and Auburn, among a few other contenders. Uh the 2027 interior offensive lineman out of Columbus, Texas, uh is rated as a three-star recruit, and he's now the eighth commitment of the class, joining Easton Royal, the five-star uh Cameron Hall, and then three-star offensive lineman, Jackson Cook, tight end J JC uh Garossi, quarterback Ty Knutson, safety Greedy James, and linebacker Cade Hogg. Uh he was ranked as the number 417 player in the country, the number 23 interior offensive lineman in the class. Uh, but more importantly, Zach, this guy has a little bit of versatility to his game as well. Uh 6'3, 275 pounds, but he played the majority of his uh of last season at left tackle with Columbus, uh leading them to an 11-3 record and uh a state quarterfinal appearance. He also played left tackle as a sophomore for Columbus and also played some defensive line on their way to winning a state title when he was a sophomore. He also does some track and field stuff, so he's a dual sport athlete. He does project as a guard or a center for Texas uh with alongside uh Westlake's Jackson Cook, who committed earlier this spring. Uh, but this is a this is, you know, it's a three-star guy, so nobody's gonna be uh popping champagne corks and saying, oh, hell yeah, we're we're on our way to the number one class. But these are the kinds of guys that you build the foundation of your class with. You know, these are the kinds of guys that really mold and bring the group together and and give you some solid depth for the future as they develop. Uh a la Trey Weisner, I mean, he was a very unheralded recruit, three-star guy coming out of uh coming out of high school, and he eventually ended up being a starter and a thousand-yard rusher in the SEC. There's other examples of that on the roster as well, but this is just another you know, depth piece for this class that Texas can move forward with and Kyle Flood can develop into hopefully a future, hopefully a future starter, maybe a future rotation guy on the offensive line.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, with the 2027 class currently, there's still a lot of work to be done, but there's not a lot of star power at the top. Um, obviously got Easton Royal, but after that, you know, Cameron Hall as well, four-star, but then he kind of you know drops off a little bit. Uh doesn't mean that these guys necessarily aren't gonna eventually contribute. That's just you know how things are right now. But it's clearly the the coaching staff, you know, sees potential in this in this class. And uh is this gonna turn out to be the best Texas recruiting class of all time? No, it won't. Uh, you know, at least when it comes to the you know the rankings, doesn't mean that these guys can eventually you know contribute to the program success down the line. But uh yeah, with with uh with Hemphill Woods, um, yeah, you're not gonna pop champagne like you said. Uh he's not gonna move the needle necessarily when it comes to the overall class ranking, but that versatility is really, really big. And obviously you got to trust Steve Sarkeesian and Kyle Flood when it comes to uh offensive line recruiting. Um until proven otherwise, you you just got you gotta put your faith in those guys and and you know trust what they what they see when it comes to the future. Uh because you know, a three-star guy, uh you'll he you'll probably see rivals of Texas, you know, saying, Oh, it's such a three-star. Why are we why are we saying boom? Why why are we you know celebrating this as you know big time news? But uh that that's how you develop a program. You you gotta get these kind of guys in there and and the guys that you see potential in and build around them. And uh I think some of the bigger names for Texas could come this summer when they start hosting these official visitors and and uh and things like that. And you know, like John Meredith, I I know uh Texas and AM are are two teams battling for him, the number one cornerback in the class. You know, the star the star power will come, but you you're not gonna build a recruiting class with 25 stars. Uh you're you're gonna you're gonna have to build with with those guys that may have got overlooked, but certainly with Hemphill Woods, I mean he's not overlooked, multiple uh multiple uh, you know, power four offers, and so other teams clearly see the potential in him as well. And so you hopefully, you know, down the line he'll eventually be able to contribute and then uh you know, in the process, maybe proving some people wrong as well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and Texas is still in it, like Zach said, for a bunch of star power. Let's not get that twisted. Uh, they're in a tremendous position for five-star left tackle Kennedy Brown, who is currently favored to land with the Longhorns, according to the on-three recruiting uh prediction machine. Also, they are very firmly in the race for five-star edge, KJ Green, five-star corner, John Meredith the third, like Zach mentioned, uh, who has set a visit to Austin.
