A surprising hire can tell you everything about a program’s ambition. When we brought Mark Stoops to Austin as a special assistant, it wasn’t about headlines—it was about sharpening the edge that wins games in November and playoff runs in January. We dig into why pairing Stoops’ SEC-tested mind with Will Muschamp creates a powerful defensive brain trust, how DB expertise elevates communication on the back end, and why an extra veteran eye on scouting and self-scout reduces the cracks that cost possessions.

We also dive into a strong Texas showing at the NFL Combine. Anthony Hill validated top-40 buzz with speed and power that translate to today’s off-ball linebacker role. Michael Taft turned heads with smoother-than-expected testing and clean drills that scream special teams ace and dependable depth. Manny Muhammad put verified speed behind his shutdown reputation, flashing the burst and vertical juice teams need outside or in nickel. It’s a snapshot of a program developing pros with range, toughness, and smart technique—traits NFL rooms covet.

Then we turn to a rivalry win that mattered: a gritty 76–70 road result at Texas A&M that steadied the resume and finally showed bite on the defensive end. Nine blocks, a 41–32 rebounding margin, 94 percent at the line, and late shot-making from Tremon Mark and Jordan Pope told the story. We unpack what held the Aggies below their rhythm, why timely contests and rotation discipline changed the math, and how this performance reframes Texas’ bracket outlook. With Fayetteville and Oklahoma ahead, we map the clearest path to locking a bid and nudging seeding into a friendlier lane.

If you’re here for strategy, culture, and the small edges that become big wins, you’ll feel at home. Tap play, ride with us into March, and share your take: is Stoops the missing piece for a deeper run? Subscribe, leave a review, and send this to a Longhorn who needs a little optimism today.

Stoops Hire Announced And First Reactions

SPEAKER_01

Good morning.

SPEAKER_03

Welcome into another edition of the Texas Longhorns on SI podcast. I'm your host, Matt Galatson, and I'm joined as always by my co-host, Zach Demitt. Zach, Monday kind of uh took us a little by surprise, I would say. Uh pretty late in the afternoon it was announced that uh Texas had hired Mark Stoops, the former Kentucky head coach and one time almost Texas AM head coach as a special uh special assistant to Steve Sarkeesian. And you know what? I like it, Zach. I think that this is gonna be great for the program. Uh I'll explain why here in a minute, but just give me your general thoughts on the move real quick before I get into mine.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I like it a lot. Um, it did come out of nowhere a little bit. Uh of course, Mark Stoops uh, you know, being replaced by Will Stein there at Kentucky. Um, you know, interesting move there for the Wildcats that I think will work out for them in the future. And you know, things didn't work out for Mark Stoops, you know, super well as a head coach at Kentucky. Um he had four bowl wins, which is pretty solid, but overall pretty underwhelming for the most part. But I think that he uh, you know, showed that he can, you know, coach very well against you know top-tier teams, as you know, as Texas fans saw last year in Lexington. Um so you hire him to a uh still a you know

What Stoops Brings To Texas Defense

SPEAKER_02

smaller but still major role on the staff. I think I think it's a great move for the Longhorns, uh, especially because he's more of a defensive guy. And so I think that'll help that side of the ball even more, uh, helping out Wilmus Champ and helping out Sue Sarkeesian. So I like it a lot.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's it's interesting because like here's what Mark Stoops brings you, right? He brings you a tough-nosed mentality that this team could probably use. And he brings you a ton of SEC expertise in terms of like he's he's been at Kentucky for forever, so he knows all of these programs very well. Uh he brings you a defensive mind. He specialized in defensive backs uh in his previous stops as a defensive coordinator and uh you know as a as an assistant before that. So he's kind of and I saw Inside Texas make this comparison and I really liked it, so I'm gonna use it too, and credit to them. He's kind of like Will Muschamp was to Georgia. Yeah you know, he he he brings in some just uh a guy that can help you game plan for uh you know uh develop specific game plans for opposing, you know, SEC teams and really help you, you know, hone in on a few things uh over there on the defensive side of the ball. And I I think it's great. Like it Texas has had huge success with these you know one-year special assistant analyst types that used to be head coaches. You look back to Gary Patterson, you look back to uh you know just last year with with uh Neil Brown, and there's a ton of other ones as well. Paul Christ, uh, you could go on down the list. All of these guys have had impacts from behind the scenes that you know and I I look like Paul Feinbaum came out, I was like, I don't know what the what they're doing this for. They

Analyst Roles, Precedent, And Feinbaum’s Take

SPEAKER_03

already have Will Muskchamp on the roster. Why are they bringing in Mark Stubs? It's uh it's not that hard to understand. It's an additional experienced SEC coach that's going to help you game plan and going to help you in various, you know, various areas of your roster on the defensive side of the ball, probably specifically. And he's also going to help in development and scouting and all these different things that he did at Kentucky, help you identify talent in the southeast. Uh, I I honestly think it's a home run. Like Sarka's just cooking right now when he like in this development of his staff, and I couldn't be happier about it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I I like Paul Feinbaum, but I don't understand that criticism. I I just I mean I don't mind him. I think I think he you know says some good things, but sometimes he you know makes certain opinions seem silly, just trying to make a headline. I don't know, but I don't see how you can see this as a bad move in any way, especially when he was just the head coach last season. And he's he was the head coach of Kentucky since 2013. I understand that they weren't exactly an elite program, but that's so much experience that you're adding to your staff. And Steve Sarkeesia knows that if you want to win a championship, uh you you you can't, you know, just rely on on your own expertise. Stark has been very adamant that he wants to remain the play caller on offense. He says that's what I was hired for. Okay, understand that. But aside from that, everything else in the program, he he's gonna want to get all the help he can get to make sure that they get to they get to the mountaintop that they want to reach, and that's won a national championship. And so um, especially when you're you know hiring someone that's a you know defensive expert like Mark Stoops is, uh I don't see how it can't be seen as anything other than a great hire. Um, you know, if he had been hired as a defensive coordinator instead of Will Muschamp, uh it still you know would have been an interesting hire, and that and that would have been uh seen as you know a positive move in my opinion. I still think though that Will Muschamp was the right was the right pick, even if that was a little bit surprising. But when you add both of those guys to the mix, um I don't, and especially with Mark Stoops, the role he's gonna be having, I don't see how you can look at it as anything other than positive. So um, yeah, I mean Mark Stoops, he his his teams brought their all in recent seasons against Georgia, against Texas. A lot of people were saying how Lexington was kind of underrated when some of these uh when some of these big teams would come to play there, and an unranked Kentucky team would almost be able to pull out a victory. And that happened a few times. I think that goes in large part to uh what Mark Stoops can do as a head coach. And so I think that uh from game planning to decision making, things like that, Mark Stoops will be able to help Steve Sarkeesian this upcoming season because he Stark knows that uh he's gonna have a lot on his plate and having another uh set of eyes and you know and some additional knowledge right next to you that can't hurt at all. And it just it's gonna help this program, help his coaching staff. So uh saying it's a bad move whenever uh we haven't even seen any reason to believe it's bad is just kind of silly.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I mean weird stuff happened at Kroger Field at night. Like every single year there was one of those games where it was like Georgia a couple years ago or Texas last year, or whatever whatever the case was, there was always something weird and it happened almost twice last year. They almost beat Ole Miss too. I I don't want anybody forget that they almost beat Ole Miss at Kroger Field, they almost beat Texas at Kroger Field. It's just like it was a weird thing that was going on over there, uh, and and nobody could explain it. And the fact of the matter is it was Mark Stoops who was phenomenal at game planning for opposing offenses and got his teams ready to play, and he's gonna bring some of that mentality to Texas, uh, you know, whether people like to believe it or not. And here's Paul Feinbaum's quote just for context. He said, but Will Mus or he said uh the question I have is didn't he just hire Will Muschamp? How many people have two ex-SEC coaches now Nick Sabin used to, I think, but he has two ex ex-SEC coaches, one is the DC and the other one is what? We don't know. It's one thing if you had a 28-year-old defensive coordinator that you wanted to bring a mentor to, but Will Muschamp is probably the same age as Mark Stoops. It just goes to show once you're a former coach, you're probably going to be a coach or analyst somewhere. So good for Mark Stoops. He lands in Austin while he gets his uh while he gets to collect his buyout money. It's a it's a lot better than that. Like it he he makes it sound like, oh yeah, he's just gonna, you know, got a got a little you know side gig while he collects his buyout money. It's like, no, he's gonna be doing some very valuable things for Texas, and I can't wait to see what happens.

Weird Nights At Kroger Field And Game Planning

SPEAKER_03

Um it it it kind of gives me you know Gary Patterson vibes. I mean, it's not gonna be to that level, I don't think, because Gary Patterson, I think, is one of the best defensive minds in the history of football. And adding him to your defense really did st did a lot of incredible things in 2024, but you know, it he's gonna have a very positive impact, and I can't wait to see it. Uh let's uh let's change gears over to the NFL combine,

NFL Combine Standouts From Texas

SPEAKER_03

Zach. You know, we we we saw the conclusion of all the players uh from the Longhorns, all seven Longhorns who participated uh uh in the onfield, and some who, you know, uh really I think boosted their draft stock quite significantly. Um and you know, Jalen Gilbo, for example, didn't participate in any of the on-field stuff, he just uh participated in the interviews. Uh, he did his weigh-in and those kinds of things. So he didn't necessarily do a whole lot for himself. He's saving that for the Texas Pro Day, but there were a couple of longhorns that I think stood out to both of us. Uh, and I'll start with, you know, the obvious one, Anthony Hill, uh, I thought was unbelievable. I thought he did himself incredible uh favors at the combine. He ran uh a 4-5-1, 40-yard dash, which was third among linebackers. His 10-yard split was 1.58 seconds, which was third among linebackers. He had a 37-inch vertical jump, which was 10th. His broad jump was 10 uh 10-5, which was third. He didn't do the three-cone or the 20-yard shuttle, but he also tied for third among linebackers in and bench reps at 21. So uh, you know, and all of this is to say also he also suffered a minor injury at the combine, so he wasn't able to you know do everything to the level that he wanted to do it. So uh I was really pleased with his performance. I think he guaranteed himself at least a day two selection, and I I would be shocked, maybe not shocked, but I would be surprised if he's not a first-round pick.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I I like what Anthony Hill did for sure in Indianapolis. Um, you see a lot of these guys, uh, you know, not just on Texas, but other teams holding out for some of these drills. And I'm not an expert on you know what the uh you know approach is there because I think that if you have a chance to boost your draft stock, if you are uh potentially lower on the board, why not go ahead and do it? Um but Anthony Hill is as a first round, second round guy, and he could he could just elect to not do any of these things and just be uh satisfied with his day two selection and not try to work his way up, but he chose to participate in almost all the drills, and and you you gotta tip your hat to him for that because he doesn't have to do that. He could hold out uh and just wait till the pro day or or just be satisfied with the day two selection. But um, I think it definitely worked out for him because now he's he's gonna be approaching that first round territory, even if he doesn't uh get selected in the first round. You already know that a lot of teams have a first round grade on him. So it may just be a result of, you know, he may be a result of a day two pick just because you know a lot of a lot of their uh players are really, really talented in this draft. And then he, you know, he may be pick number 33, pick number 34, who knows? So uh yeah, I like what he did there for sure. Um, I think Michael Taft really helped himself a lot. Uh you know, you can make an argument for a lot of these guys, but um, I think a lot of people were a little bit surprised uh what with what Michael Taft was able to show. Uh Texas fans probably not as surprised, but I think that a 4-5 on the 40-yard dash uh was a really good time for him. You know, it's no it's no secret that Michael Taff isn't the most athletic guy. He's not known as the fastest guy. Um, but so so when you're able to put a time like that on the board and you're you're better than a lot of these uh cornerbacks and safeties that were highly recruited out of high school, um, and and you're posting a better time than them with the edible combine. Uh, you know, that says a lot about about what Michael Taff's able to do. Um, and and when he was doing the uh uh the gauntlet drill where they're you know, you know, catching the balls and they're backpedaling, uh, you know, I I I think he looked really, really smooth. His hand he was relying a lot on his hands. Uh he looked smooth out of his breaks. Um I know there's not really a uh you know time or like number to put next to that that drill, but when you have zero drops and he looks smooth while doing it, uh scouts are gonna notice that. And so I I think I think Michael Tack really helped himself. Uh he's not guaranteed a spot to be drafted at all, but I think that uh he's he's at least putting himself in that sixth or seventh round of conversation, while also uh, you know, if he doesn't get there, at least guaranteeing himself an undrafted free agent spot, which is something that a lot of guys uh you know work were work their whole lives for it. Even if they don't get drafted, at least they're getting a chance to you know get that undrafted uh contract and then have a chance to you know make the 53-man roster. So um I think Michael Taft really helped himself, and I'm gonna be interested to see what he does during the pro day. If he sticks with that 40 time, or if he decides, you know what, I'm just gonna run it again, see if I can get something better, and you know, while these countries are watching me. So I like what Michael Taft did and um interested to see what the future looks like for him in the next couple months.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I mean he could be anywhere between a late day two to a day three pick, uh, depending on what you know what teams like uh from what they saw at the combine, what they like in his in his tape. But also his his intangibles, I think, is are some are th is a trait. I I don't even know how to say that correctly. It's a it's a weird thing to say, but like his intangibles are so elite that I think a team is gonna look at those things and be like, yeah, we want this guy on our locker. He's a fantastic our locker room, he's a fantastic uh teammate, he's a fantastic locker room guy, he's a great leader on the field. Um, you know, he'll he'll be a solid backup safety uh in his in his early years in the NFL, uh, or a special teams guy or something like that. And I think he'll earn his way onto a roster regardless of where he gets drafted. I I feel really good about that. I mean he he was such a timely playmaker for this this team, too. It seemed like whenever Texas needed a big play over the last couple of years, Michael Taft was able to make it. You go back to that interception against AM in each of the last two years, uh, you know, some of those things that he was able to do were were just you know very, very difficult for a player who came out of high school, uh, you know, not really ranked as a recruit, uh, you know, didn't get recruited by a whole bunch of schools, was a walk-on at Texas, earned himself a scholarship, and now he's he's gonna be off to the NFL. So I I think he's continuing to rise as a prospect in every way, and I'm really pleased to see that. One more Zach that I wanted to mention, by the way, uh is Manny Mohammed. Uh he kind of blew me away. Like there is some questions about him with his size. There were no questions about him and his ability to lock down one side of the field at Texas. I mean, he was unbelievable over the last two years for the Horns, but his 40-yard dash, he hit a 4-4-2, which was eighth among corners. He had the best 10-yard split time at 1.51 seconds. He also had a 39-inch vertical, which was tied for eighth, and a 10 uh 10-10 broad jump, which was tied for sixth. So he displayed a lot of athletic traits that I don't think a lot of people realized he had. Because over the last couple years, uh like you didn't hear Manny Mohammed's name a whole lot. And typically that's like, okay, why why is that? Well, for corners, that's a good thing because that means they're not throwing the ball his way because they know they can't do it. And he was um he was one of those guys for Texas throughout the last couple of years, and he kind of stepped up last year in a big way too. You know, he he improved his game into more of a ball hawk. You know, you saw the couple the couple of interceptions he had against Oklahoma. And he made some plays throughout the year as well that I think you know really boosted his stock and you know, the performance of the combine that he put on just you know added a extra layer of uh extra layer of good to his draft profile, in my opinion.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I I agree with you. You know, of course, Texas fans they know Manny Muhammad well, but I yeah, on the national stage, you didn't hear too much about him. Um and so I think he's certainly caught some some attention from scouts, um, and then you know just fans in general at the combine. So uh I think he looked really smooth as well. That's not really surprising, though. Uh, you know, a 4-4-2, uh, I mean, that's still that's still a very solid time. There's some fast cornerbacks, um, but speed isn't isn't what it's all about as a cornerback. There's more to it. And so uh it's kind of like what people have said with receivers. Uh, I guess Xavier Worthy is maybe the exception, but when you see a receiver running a super fast 40 time, a lot of times they're not going to be like you're a number one receiver or a super elite guy. So a 40-yard time uh that's near the top is still really good, but it's not the whole story. And so the fact that he still posts a solid 40 times is impressive in in other categories as well, while also showing that he

Anthony Hill’s Metrics And Draft Range

SPEAKER_02

that he was a number one uh you know lockdown corner in college. I think I think there's a lot of uh a lot of good things there to like if you're if you're an NFL scout and if you if you're a franchise, you know, looking to add your secondary. So um I'm really I'm really interested to see what happens with Manny Mohammed. Uh, you know, has he worked his way up uh even higher into day two? Um I think you know that's he certainly did that uh in Indianapolis. And so it'll be interesting to see, you know, uh who he lands with and uh what kind of uh responsibility he's given as as a rookie next season.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, absolutely. Uh all right, let's uh let's change gears, Zach. Texas got a big win over the weekend against Texas AM. We're gonna talk about that after this break, and uh a little bit of how you know it affected their bracketology uh projections as well. So stick with us and we'll be right back.

SPEAKER_03

Welcome back to the Texas Longhorns on SI podcast. I'm your host, Matt Galaxon, and I'm joined by Zach Dimmitt. And Zach, Texas got a big win over the weekend uh against the Texas AM Aggies, beating uh the Aggies 76 to 70 in college station on senior day, no less. Uh, they had some big performances on the offensive side of the ball, uh, including 23 from Tremone Mark, who led all scores, only 11 from Dalen Swain, who has typically been the Longhorns leading scorer, and they were able to make up for his lack of scoring uh in this game, although he did also add 10 rebounds to his uh stat sheet as well. Jordan Pope finished with 17 points. Uh Modus Voikatis also had 14 points. And, you know, the the the efficiency wasn't necessarily there and uh for the Longhorns. They they shot 44%, which is solid. Uh they were only they were 33% from beyond the arc, which was solid. 15 of 16 from the free throw line, 94%. That was huge. They also out-rebounded the Aggies 41 to 32. And uh, I mean, there's no two ways around it, Zach. This win was absolutely massive for the Longhorns and their resume, and you you you're starting to feel really good about their tournament spot right now. Uh, and also there's a little bit of sweetness attitude as well, because you kind of hurt your uh your your arch rival's resume as well.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it it was a huge win, especially when it's coming at this point in the season. You know, if you you know, if this happens uh, you know, the first week of SEC play, it's still a big win because it's coming on the road against your arch rival. But um the fact that it comes, you know, right the day before March, uh, and both these teams being in a similar bubble position, uh, it was huge. Uh I was there covering the game uh in college station, and uh no surprise, but Reed Arena was absolutely rocking. Uh they have they have an amazing crowd over there, and I don't think anyone's surprised by that. You can say whatever you want about AM, but their fans are absolutely diehard. Um, and so the fact that Texas was able to overcome that environment and come out with the win was was was massive. Uh, you know the Alabama win in Tuscaloosa is Texas's best win on the resume. Uh, but this you can argue this isn't one of the most important wins uh because it gets you one step closer to uh securing that spot and CWA tournament. And what I was really impressed by was Texas's defense. That's obviously been uh the biggest you know concern. Sean Miller has not sugarcoated it. He's made it clear that our defense has has hurt us. He's he's said that many times in press conferences. Um, but uh yeah, I I you know a season high nine blocks for Texas, uh seven in the first half. Uh that that was that was really impressive. Um and you know, of course you mentioned Dalen Swain. He he had 11 he was scoreless in the second half, 11 points in the first half. Uh but him and Modus Focatis both have gotten foul trouble, and Termon Mark and uh Jordan Pope really stepped it up. Uh crucial buckets down the stretch by both of those guys, just just scoring off no sets, taking their guys one-on-one, and just hitting jump shots. And that's that's all that's really all

Michael Taft’s Stock And Intangibles

SPEAKER_02

it was from Texas. There was nothing fancy about it. And while also you know, playing solid, not locked down, but solid defense on the other end, which is all you can ask for if you're Sean Miller. So yeah, big win. Uh you you you know, Texas held AM like I believe 18 points below their scoring average. Uh, I mean, you know, AM has gotten to the 80s, sometimes the 90s in some of these SEC games, and we hold them to 70 points uh on their home floor, uh that's big time, especially for a team where the you know where the defense has been a concern. So yeah, obviously a huge win. Uh the bracketology, uh latest bracketology from uh ESPN has Texas as a 10 seed. Um, and they face, I believe it's uh like Wyoming, or not Wyoming, uh Wisconsin. Um, yeah, the Wisconsin, it's you know, in Oklahoma City, that would be a really nice draw for Texas, in my opinion. Um, you avoid the eight-nine matchup. I think Wisconsin has struggled a little bit as of late. Um, of course, you would have to face number two Houston if you win that game. Uh, so you know, obviously it's gonna be very tough. You're gonna get past Wisconsin first if it plays out that way. But if you play in Oklahoma City as a 10 seed, you're gonna have a lot of Texas fans there. You couldn't ask for a much better draw, all things considered. So we'll see how things play out. But big win for Texas. They're pretty much one win away from locking up a bib, in my opinion. Um, and they faced Arkansas tomorrow in Fayetteville, and a win there would certainly lock lock them in. So we'll wait and see what happens.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I'm glad you brought up the defense, Zach, because I mean Sean Miller lit into his team last week, calling it the worst defensive team that he has ever coached, more or less. Um, I mean, that's not his exact quote, but you can go uh you can go look on our pretty close. You can go look on our side story or or or watch our show from last week. I mean, he absolutely laid into his team. Uh I think it was it was you that told me that out of the top 50 in Ken Palm, they had the worst defensive rating of all those teams. Uh so to hold, you know, to hold Texas AM to 70 is one thing. Uh Texas AM had three players that combined for 53 points. It was Rashawn A. G. Marcus Hill, and Pop Isaacs. The other eight players that were on the floor for Texas AM combined for 17.

unknown

Yep.

SPEAKER_03

That's a sign of good defense to me. I mean, I know that Texas AM has had their struggles as well uh over the past couple of weeks and they haven't been the same team they were early in the season. But, you know, to to to be able to basically keep all of these other players in check and basically, you know, uh except your loss with Rashawn A. G, because he's a he's a great player and he's a he plays a position that Texas has had a lot of trouble defending. But you basically remove all the other threats from from the equation. And that that is a big reason why they were able to win this game. And um, you know, it's a it's a big win for Sean Miller. Now you look forward and you have uh you have Arkansas tomorrow night, which we will preview on our show tomorrow. Um but then you also have uh uh uh an opportunity to close the season against Oklahoma, who is absolutely beatable. Uh you beat them by 10 earlier in the season in Norman, and and now you get them at home. So, you know, even if you don't beat Arkansas, you still feel pretty good about where this team sits. But if you if they do beat Arkansas, they're absolutely a tournament lock, and there's no question about it. I mean, that's going to be a really, really tough environment. Um, you know, they they they play very, very well in Fayetteville. I think uh was it you that pointed out last week that they haven't lost a home game yet this year?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that's that sounds about right. All their losses have been road or neutral. So Fayetteville is very, very tough.

SPEAKER_03

So it's gonna be a tall task for Texas, but like I said, we'll get into that tomorrow. I and I really like this this uh this landing spot in the latest bracketology as well. I mean, obviously you don't like that Michigan and and Houston are on that side of the bracket uh in your you know in your region, but you know, the the rest of it is is pretty manageable. I mean, Wisconsin was really good earlier in the year, like Zach said, they've been struggling as of late. NC State's in there. Uh I Texas beat NC State earlier this year, didn't they? So it's it's a very manageable region. And you you ought honestly, another, like I said, another very sweet part of this is you you knock Texas AM down to a projected 11 seed right now. And they've got two games left on their schedule, one of which is against Kentucky uh tomorrow night, or tonight, excuse me.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_03

And that's gonna be a big one uh for them. And if they lose that game, I don't know that an LSU win really helps them that much because LSU is not a good team. So this feels like you put Texas AM in a must-win position against Kentucky, and that's really all you can ask for.
